Hello. I’m Imogen, a potter, weaver and print maker based in Pontypridd; South Wales. I learnt to throw at my Dad’s knee when I was just eight years old. After leaving university with a ceramics degree I dedicated the next 12 years of my life to community art as well as an even more niche art-form of willow sculpting. I even spent 4 years as a carpenter! The draw of clay was just too strong for me though and I felt it was time to return to my roots. The clay was calling to me once again!

These last two years I have been slowly building my skills back up and finding my artistic voice (which is a lot harder than you would think!) I wanted to create a dialogue between my work so that they feel like that they are speaking the same language even if they are singing a different tune.

Most of my pottery is thrown using terracotta clay. I like taking a very humble earthenware clay and showcasing its vibrant colour and flare. I enjoy using slip decoration for much the same reason. Here is a method of decoration that goes back centuries. It is used in folk pottery throughout the world and in many ways goes back to basics; yet it allows such expression with every brush stroke and drip.

As an artist I think its important not to hem yourself into one material or discipline as I often find that one art-form can inform another and create pathways and avenues yet to be explored. That is why I’m eager to include some of my lino/ wood prints and willow pieces to keep those carving and weaving skills alive and hopefully inform the main body of my work.

The most exciting part of this new adventure for me is thinking about where my work will find its home. Whether that is on your bedside table, in your kitchen cupboard or on display for everyone to see. For me the greatest achievement is not only creating something beautiful but also making something that is a joy to use.

Thank you for taking the time to read about me as a maker, and happy browsing!
